Twitter Best Practices

Trying to build your brand image using 140 characters at a time might seem like a challenge, but Twitter can be an incredible tool for gaining traction in your industry. And though many of the tenets for good marketing using traditional media hold true for social media, social media platforms require a different approach. If you follow a few best practices on Twitter, you'll be able to boost your company's social media presence in no time.

  1. Share with your followers. If someone is following your company, he or she has at least some interest in what you are posting. People use Twitter to gain snippets of information and insight into a company that traditional websites and print media don't offer, so give these to them. Post photos, hints about what's coming down the pipe, or even Twitter-only deals to engage your followers.
  2. Monitor. Even though social media can be very lighthearted, negative feedback can damage your company's image if you don't catch it in time. Social media maintenance requires constant effort.
  3. Tap into your followers. Consumers are the reason your company exists, so be sure to ask your followers questions. Social media provides a casual forum that encourages users to give feedback more than a more formal survey might. Users provide valuable insight into your brand and product that you can use to your company's advantage.
  4. Respond. Just as keeping a close watch on any negative feedback your company might receive, it's also important to respond in real-time to your followers. Twitter users expect quick, responsive use of social media, so closely watch your Direct Message inbox and Mentions.
  5. Show your know-how. Every company is part of an industry, so reference articles or literature within your industry to illustrate how they relate to your business.
  6. Establish your voice. Even if you're tweeting behind your company's Twitter handle, social media draws people in because platforms like Facebook and Twitter engage them with real people. Writing tweets with a likable tone will garner your company a more positive brand image and make it more likely that followers will engage with your brand.

Few readers will do little beyond skimming the material to find the information they're searching for, so you want to make sure that you've got an attractive, well-designed product to make those first few seconds count.
